The Allegheny Defense Project is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization dedicated to protecting and restoring the wild forests and rivers of the Allegheny Plateau and the Allegheny National Forest (ANF), Pennsylvania’s only national forest.
The Allegheny Defense Project formed in 1994 in order to defend our public lands from commercial logging, oil and gas drilling, and other extractive industries which threaten the health and well-being of these incredible places.
Allegheny Defense Project focuses our work on the Allegheny Plateau, to protect these lands through grassroots organizing, research, education, aerial and on-the-ground monitoring, and striving to ensure management agencies follow laws designed to protect our wild forests and rivers.

The Allegheny forests lie along the Allegheny Plateau - an ancient geological feature spanning much of northern Pennsylvania. One hundred years ago, these forests were devastated by widespread clear cutting resulting in wildfires, flooding, and widespread loss of plant and animal species. Gone were the towering white pines, the 500 year old hemlocks, the wolf, the cougar, and much more.
Today our forests have begun to return, but remain threatened. In less than 25 years, from 1969 to 1992 logging levels in Pennsylvania tripled.
The Allegheny region boasts millions of acres of public lands, including the 513,000 acre Allegheny National Forest, state forests, and state parks. Many of these beautiful public lands are threatened by extractive industries.
