The timber and oil & gas corporations have
had nearly unlimited access to the Allegheny National Forest
for too long. They have damaged our economies, stifled our
forest recovery, and polluted our communities. It is time
for America to take our public lands back!
The timber industry and even the U.S. Forest
Service have claimed over and over that utilizing the Allegheny
National Forest as a tree farm for timber corporations is
fine because that is why our national forests were created.
But this isn't true for the Allegheny which was established
in 1923 by President Calvin Coolidge specifically for the
protection of "navigable waters."
Most Americans would not be surprised that
70% of the population supports an end to commercial logging
in national forests. Nor would they be surprised to learn
that a majority of Americans are opposed to any form of resource
extraction in their national forests. So how is it that a
minority of public opinion controls management of these lands?
These lands belong to Americans and their
protection is an important part of our country's heritage.
Locking up the Allegheny National Forest for timber corporations
is a sorry way to recognize the value of these lands to clean
water, clean air, recreation and solitude, and wildlife conservation.
Allegheny Wild! seeks to restore the Allegheny
National Forest as a public trust for Americans to enjoy.
This is recognized by the hundreds of people who have already
endorsed the newly-released plan. Give a hand and join the
growing masses today!

5
Steps to Protect the Allegheny
1. Endorse Allegheny Wild!
The easiest and quickest way to help move
the Allegheny Wild! effort forward is to endorse the Allegheny
Wild! proposal. As an endorser, you will be recognized on
the Allegheny Defense Project's website as well as in our
newsletter and you will help move Allegheny Wild! closer to
implementation. Download endorsement form here.
2. Gather Endorsements/Petition Signers
Of course, building our grassroots organizing
network is one of the best things we can do for Allegheny
wilderness. By getting signers on the Allegheny Wild! petition
or endorsements from your friends, groups you work with, and
businesses you can help broaden this important movement even
faster than it is today.
3. Attend Public Meetings
This fall, the U.S. Forest Service begins
the official, legally mandated process for revision of the
Allegheny National Forest's management plan. With your help
we can help make Allegheny Wild! a major part of this process.
Contact the Forest Service to get a meeting in your area at
(814) 723-5150 or r9_allegheny_nf@fs.fed.us.
4. Write Public Comments
Attendance at public meetings and the submission
of written comments are the two most effective ways to influence
the forest plan revision process. Send written comments to
Supervisor Kevin B. Elliott, Allegheny National Forest, PO
Box 847, Warren, PA 16365 or kbelliott@fs.fed.us.
5. Support the Allegheny Defense Project
We need your support so that we may continue
our efforts to make Allegheny Wild! a reality. To volunteer
