ATV's
All-terrain
Vehicles have become a growing nuisance in the Allegheny National
Forest. Even with an extensive trail system, illegal riding is out
of control. This is causing unacceptable disturbances and watershed
degradation. It has even resulted in a rise of riding-related injuries
with at least one mortality in each of the last two years.
Due to the lack of appropriate trail maintenance,
control of illegal ATV riding, the rise of ATV facilities on private
lands, the inability to enforce more stringent safety and health
precautions, and the ongoing impacts to the environment the Allegheny
Defense Project has called for a moratorium on new ATV trails.
This is not an easy issue to succeed on. The U.S.
Forest Service has decided internally, and illegally, to make ATV
trails the feature of its recreation management. This, despite the
well documented problems associated with ATV use in the Allegheny
National Forest.
