The Allegheny National Forest was established in 1923 by President Calvin Coolidge in order to protect the upper Allegheny River watershed. Allegheny Defense Project's proposal for 45,000 acres of new Wilderness and over 200 miles of new hiking, bicycle, and horse trails needs your support! The US Forest Service's new Forest Plan calls for 100,000 acres of logging over the next twenty years. Already host to over 9,000 oil and gas wells and 3,000 miles of roads, the Forest Service predicts an additional 12,000 oil and gas wells could be drilled by 2020 with an additional 3,000 miles of roads constructed just by the oil and gas industry.
