Moving On. Changes and More.
Wow, that layout sucks huh? Don't worry, it is temporary. As in hopefully only two hours temporary.
But this is new. Check it out. Commenting is BACK! But you have to register with Typekey. Typekey is an entirely free, anonymous (unless you don't want to be) system. It allows us to block spam and you to post without worrying about retribution!
Seriously, register now by going to Typekey and do not forget to verify your registration (Typekey will send you an e-mail). Then just click on a thread to comment. It is easy and we'll startup brand new content this week as a reward!
It shouldn't have taken that long to deal with this issue but it is dealt with now so we'll just have to live with it. And remember, we never stop moving to make the Allegheny forever wild and free for all good Americans!
Update: Oh, and if it appears that the blog is changing before your very eyes, you aren't losing it. It is.

One. I visited Painter Run in February. It appears as though the extractors and their cohorts have had their way. I didn’t stay long but it seems that the salvage is complete. This project showed me that the USFdisS has no ear for public comment. I hiked this woods last fall with the District Ranger. I explained, as we walked, why for economic reasons, for location, and for the uniqueness of the Painter Run Watershed, that this salvage project must not proceed. As we walked out, he asked “Is that all?” I remember how he was awed at the size of the poplar that was still standing.
Two. On a Sunday morning in February, we hiked the NCT from Rt 948 to the Tionesta Scenic area. For the first hour of this hike, we were treated to the sounds of the extractors as they hauled stone down FR 148 on our right, jake brakes and all, then up FR 446 on our left. Did I mention this was Sunday morning. Fortunately, as we walked these sounds faded and we were treated to a wonderful hike. The ANF has a lot of potential.
Three. Two weekends ago, we hiked the NCT from the TSA to US Rt 6. Being a southlander, I expected a few inches of old snow. The 14" of general snow, with up to 24" in many areas, made this seven mile trek much more strenuous than we planned. Bobcat tracks were spotted among the rocks. Turkey were plentiful. Giant hemlock, maple, and black cherry were found the length of the hike. This woods does have potential.
Four. I don’t know why but the audacity of those mismanaging the ANF continues to amaze me. On their website, they have announced a speaker to appear at the Kane Kountry Klub. Reservations are required, and can only be obtained through AHUG-ly, a radical pro-logging interest group. So much for multiple use. I haven’t seen any announcements on the ANF web-site for the ADP meet ups.
What me, ramble?

Thanks for the update on Painter Run, Rj. I was in the Little Salmon Creek watershed last weekend and it was astonishing how much this area has changed in just the last two years. Many new oil and gas wells and storage tanks with lots of new roads.
I also visited a site that was clearcut as part of the FR 165 re-entry timber sale. Unbelievable...hardly a tree left behind and, again, new oil wells and roads throughout the clearcut. I'll be getting photos of that up soon.

We're going to spend the weekend in the Sigel area. Should be able to make at least one forage into the Forest. Mostly lounging about camp, though.
