Painter Run Bid Notice Up
We have posted the Painter Run Timber Sale Bid Notice and Prospectus. This gives details on the Painter Run Timber Sale Contract to be awarded today including stand by stand details on timber sale species and volumes.
Now, maybe you've never seen one of these. But this is the type of notice the Forest Service sends out to timber companies when they want bids for timber. It is key if you want to know how the Forest Service follows through on decisions it makes in environmental impact statements.
We've posted both a pdf version of the Painter Run notice for download and a html index to view images of the document on-line. Please use this thread to let us know what format you prefer. The Forest Service does not post this information so we hope that making this information available will help interested folks.
Update: We've now posted the bid notices for the Dead Horse Windthrow Salvage and Enterprise Timber Sales. Check out the Timber Bids Index.

This is the first timber bid sale notice and prospectus that I've seen. It is amazing how different this document is compared to all the documents that preceded it. Strictly business (as usual). This is the first mention of Unit 5 that I've ever seen, though I wondered what all the activity was outside the published project boundaries.
Note the chestnut tree buffer in the middle of the project. I think the buffer should be 323 acres. This is a fine American Chestnut tree specimen. How common are Chestnut trees in this area?
This past Saturday, I was standing in Unit 1 (formerly area D6) between the west fork of Painter Run and FR 383. The view here is humbling. (Nature's forces are awesome.) A pileated woodpecker approached from the east. It kept getting closer until it swooped by just overhead, cackling constant. I looked up and realized that ten feet in front of me was a large snag which housed a pileated cavity.
I am going to miss this wild area.
The html version is easier to read online. The pdf version prints easier.

RJ,
thanks for the comments. I am working on another entry on Painter Run which I won't get up until Monday. We are losing too many of these special wild areas to the Forest Service's consistent catering to timber interests. It has to stop!
I'll probably be out in the Painter Run area sometime this weekend.

Jim,
Did you make it to Painter Run? I was north myself this weekend and didn't see your post til Sunday evening.
We spent Sunday on the FR449 to Dunham Siding section of the NCT. This is my favorite section of trail so far, having started in January on the Vowinkle Road. We visited Heart's Content and Minister Creek briefly.
Heart's Content was awesome as usual.
